Accra, Ghana—Hauwa Ibrahim, a Nigerian attorney renowned for her successful defense of women condemned to death in shariah law courts and recipient of the European Parliament's 2005 Sakharov Prize, spoke to fellows about the bridging of research and social justice advocacy. In her keynote address to fellows convened at one of two annual workshops, she presented her strategies for achieving justice in Nigerian courts in the north through the practice of shariah law. These strategies are featured in her handbook, Practicing Shariah Law: Seven Strategies for Achieving Justice in Sharia, which was funded by the SSRC Academia in the Public Sphere Grants Program.
