Hauwa Ibrahim, a Nigerian attorney renowned for her successful defense of women condemned to death in shariah law courts and recipient of the European Parliament's 2005 Sakharov Prize, spoke to fellows about the bridging of research and social justice advocacy. In her keynote address to fellows convened at one of two annual Next Generation Social Sciences workshops, she presented her strategies for achieving justice in northern Nigerian shariah courts. These strategies are featured in her handbook, Practicing Shariah Law: Seven Strategies for Achieving Justice in Shariah Courts, which was funded through the SSRC Academia in the Public Sphere Grant Program.
